Hazardous Building Materials Assessment

Steer Environmental Associates Ltd. provides professional hazardous building materials assessment services for asbestos and lead by an Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) certified inspector. AHERA-certified inspectors are trained to identify, sample, and delineate hazardous materials including asbestos-containing materials (ACM), asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM), and lead paint among others. Following identification and delineation of hazardous materials, Steer Environmental assists clients by recommending cost-efficient, practical solutions to ameliorate or remediate problem areas. Steer Environmental has completed numerous hazardous building material assessments in Nelson and Trail, for asbestos and asbestos-contaminated materials such as vermiculite insulation.


Environmental Monitoring

Steer Environmental works with clients to design and implement environmental monitoring programs to ensure environmental impact mitigation, regulatory compliance, and due diligence. We are experienced in construction and restoration monitoring related to highways, roads, bridge, culvert replacement, beaver-dam removal, process tailings ponds, and pipeline projects. Valued ecosystem components requiring monitoring may include sensitive habitats, fish and fish habitat, aquatic benthos, surface water and/or groundwater quality. Progress and completion reports are prepared for clients as required, summarizing the results of monitoring works. We have experience designing and executing environmental monitoring programs in remote locations of the North-Central Region, and the Southern Interior Region including the Kootenays and Okanagan.


Environmental Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment Performance

Steer Environmental Associates Ltd. specializes in the performance of human health and ecological risk assessments of contaminated sites in support of decision-making related to land remediation, development and investment/divestment. We have conducted human health and ecological risk assessments on behalf of private and public sector clients for a variety of properties including contaminated mine sites, pulp mills, saw mills, landfills, sea ports, petrochemical facilities, railway facilities, transportation facilities and shooting ranges. We are experienced in analyzing risks associated with a wide-variety of environmental contaminants including metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides and chlorinated and non-chlorinated organic compounds.

Technical Management and Support

Steer Environmental Associates Ltd. provides senior-level technical risk assessment expertise to environmental consulting/engineering firms that lack such expertise internally. We advise on the appropriateness of risk assessment as a tool for site management, assist in the development of risk assessment design, provide on-going technical support and mentorship to junior and intermediate risk assessment practitioners, and conduct risk assessment report reviews to ensure product defensibility and quality.

Third Party Review

Steer Environmental Associates Ltd. also conducts third party reviews of human health and ecological risk assessments to ensure assessment defensibility, quality and compliance with regulatory requirements.


Contaminated Sites Approved Professional Reviews

Steer Environmental Associates Ltd. conducts Contaminated Sites Approved Professional (CSAP) reviews of human health and ecological risk assessments prepared in support of applications for British Columbia Ministry of Environment (MOE) regulatory instruments (e.g., Certificate of Compliance, Approval-in-Principal). We provide this service primarily to consulting/engineering firms who lack a CSAP Risk Assessment Specialist in-house and those that require a third party to satisfy MOE requirements for arms-length reviews. Steer Environmental has completed CSAP reviews for projects in Vancouver, Surrey, and throughout Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, Southern Interior, North-Central, and First Nations lands in both urban and remote locations of British Columbia.
