Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment
Steer Environmental conducted a human health and ecological risk assessment of residual hydrocarbon contamination in shallow soil on a property located in an agricultural area of Surrey, BC. The objective of the HHERA was to determine if the soil contamination presented an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment to facilitate the sale and future agricultural use of the property.
The human health assessment evaluated contaminant exposures by residents, trespassers, construction workers, agricultural workers, and non-resident consumers of food grown onsite. Risks to all human receptors were found to be negligible with no need for remediation or active risk controls.
The ecological assessment evaluated contaminant exposures by soil invertebrates, plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, livestock, domestic pets, and a number of listed species. Risks for ecological receptors were determined to be low with no need for remediation or risk controls.
A MoE Certificate of Compliance is pending for this property.
